No need for a "big event" but development. One of my ideas to reach it: Don't play "their" games - don't use "their" rules - don't think in the box of "their" paradigms.
It's more "refuse" than "resist" - without too much ideology. You don't need to know much about "what's going on behind the curtains", it's mainly to create your own rules together with like-minded people.

MYTHS obliterated:
►Perhaps the biggest myth to die this year was that Americans’ constitutional rights are safeguarded by the Bill of Rights.
►The Rule of Law is another myth impaled by 2020’s dire developments
►Another myth that 2020 obliterated was the notion that politicians spending more than a hundred billion dollars every year for science and public health would keep Americans safe
►The benevolence and compassion of public school teachers was another myth that 2020 obliterated
►the collapse of the broader myth that the rulers and ruled have common interests
►that social media and the Internet could be a powerful propellant of free information
►the credo that politicians rule with the “consent of the governed.”
►the saddest casualty of 2020 is the myth that average Americans cherish their personal freedom.
“The very methods that liberal democracies are currently using to effectively fight the virus are the same tactics that authoritarian leaders use to dominate their people. The tools that have been temporarily deployed in the fight against a once-in-a-lifetime disease may become permanent.”
►the most dangerous myth is that Americans will finally become safe after they cease making any efforts to leash their rulers

Exactly. You do remember "we will give up a part of our civil rights to protect us from another 9/11". That's the same shit extended. Same script used and it's very blatant. But, yet again, confused public is afraid of something it can't see.

Donald Trump’s Martial-Law Talk Has Military on Red Alert:
https://www.newsweek.com/exclusive-donald-trumps-martial-law-talk-has-military-red-alert-1557056
Pentagon and Washington-area military leaders are on red alert, wary of what President Donald Trump might do in his remaining days in office. Though far-fetched, ranking officers have discussed what they would do if the president declared martial law. And military commands responsible for Washington DC are engaged in secret contingency planning in case the armed forces are called upon to maintain or restore civil order during the inauguration and transition period. According to one officer who spoke to Newsweek on condition of anonymity, the planning is being kept out of sight of the White House and Trump loyalists in the Pentagon for fear that it would be shut down.
“I’ve been associated with the military for over 40 years and I’ve never seen the discussions that are being had right now, the need for such discussions,” says a retired flag officer, currently a defense contractor who has mentored and advised his service’s senior leaders. He was granted anonymity in order to speak without fear of reprisal.
