In my library there is an 8 volume set 'The history of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire' by Edward Gibbon. Rome made 2 great mistakes they debased their currency,something the Western world especially the US is currently doing and they went for mercenary armies,which the US is also doing.

With mercenaries these days its all about the bottom line and accounting, properly trained Western troops don't come cheap so nowadays many firms hire from places like the Sudan and Somalia.

There is a difference between modern mercenaries like Blackwater and Roman  mercanaries.
