The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations will send five aircraft with a mobile hospital, doctors, rescuers and Rospotrebnadzor employees to Lebanon on Wednesday, where a powerful explosion in the port took place the day before, the ministry's press service said.

F HELL.

IT WAS 2,750 TONS OF NITRATE CONFISCATED IN 2013.

Signs point to ammonium nitrate fertilizer.

Kinda weird to think such thing could be forgotten about for a whole 7 years.

An example of the general deterioration of the country? Or something more sinister?

Now being reported in mainstream media that the President Michel Aoun himself has said it was indeed 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate that had been stored unsafely in a warehouse for six years.

This is very likely correct. Still it doesn't exclude sabotage. The issue was well known as documents and articles show. And the site was easy target. It was not military storage, security was probably very low. It's not hard to target such site with some kind of small IED, incendiary mechanism etc. As was written - timing is important and as Ali wrote - this is disastrous for Syria as well. Right after Trump's criminal Caesar act. It stinks...

And watch closely the donation campaign. US regime is such vulture that they are able to stole the money under the pretext of sanctions...

At this point I'm still undecided what triggered it. Need more info. Still didn't hear if the earlier mentioned fireworks incident is being discounted. But it's also true that ammonium nitrate degrades over time and creates heat itself, meaning sooner or later it was probably an accident waiting to happen. It happened at probably the warmest time of year in Lebanon as well, which would have meant even more heat to the material before the explosion.

Bad news for Syria absolutely. But now China may get involved with port rebuilding in Lebanon. US wouldn't have wanted to open the door to that I would have thought.

I found this. Apparently a few days ago there was record breaking temperatures not too far from Beirut. High ambient temperature is the very last thing you would want when you have an already decomposing/degrading pile of ammonium nitrate that is creating its own heat too.

It's now being suggested in the media that "Hezbollah might have some sort of link to the ammonium nitrate".

Lina Khatib, who leads the Middle East and North Africa Programmes at Chatham House in London, has questioned exactly why so much of a potentially explosive substance was being stored so close to residential neighbourhoods.

"Who needs 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate?" she asked. "It is known that this substance is used for making explosives and it is also known that Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed group, is often smuggling material like this into Lebanon through the port, so it is plausible that Hezbollah might have some sort of link to the ammonium nitrate that exploded at the port but, of course, it's too early to tell.

"But certainly this is not a normal circumstance. Lebanon's agriculture industry certainly had not been benefiting from tonnes of fertilizer sitting in a port for six years."

Lebanon's economy minister says the country has just enough grain reserves for "a bit less than a month" after the blast destroyed its main silo.

Raoul Nehme told news agency Reuters that the country needed at least three months' worth of grain stored for its food security.

However, there are ships on the way with more. Lebanon now faces the challenge of finding somewhere new to store it.
