The race to succeed Angela Merkel as German chancellor remains wide open ahead of a national election on Sunday, according to the latest polls.
Poll predictions on Saturday point to the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) holding a small but narrowing lead over Merkel's party,
the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

I hope that many voters will vote for the small parties instead of not voting at all. Even if these don't make it over the 5 percent electoral hurdle, they still steal "percentages" from the established parties. Moreover, the result (in the extreme case, if all "non-voters" would do so) looks stupid if the sum of the "others" has more percentages than the strongest party and the latter then receives, for example, only 20 % instead of 30 %. Unfortunately, it can also push the small "established" parties below 5 %.

Let's see what comes out of it. However, I see the German elections as a kind of "poll", since it will - and can - change next to nothing in Germany's politics. At best, another government can only tweak tiny things - if it wants more, then it may be possible, if nothing else helps, someone will be "JFK-ed".

The %ages of the parties, that stay below 5% will be given to the parties, who make it into the parliament. So the votes are not only lost, they strengthen the established ones.

They always tell us, the 5% are necessary to avoid situations as in the Weimar Republic. But our constitution was much more democratic then, than now (direct election of the executive, referendums on federal level etc.). They really want to avoid, that the Germans could vote for, what they want to vote, because it could be against US or UK. This is part of our puppet system.

Yes, but my point is before the government is formed. If people don't vote at all instead of small parties, all the votes go to the over 5%. To put it bluntly, if there is a 50% turnout, a party gets, say, 40% when it is counted. If instead the 50 % vote for "others", then this party gets 20 % after the votes are counted.

The "votes" of the non-voters do not appear anywhere in the election statistics - except as a "remainder" when the turnout is mentioned. Especially not on the beautiful graphs of the election.

This has no effect on the percentage ratio of parties elected to parliament, except that in one case the >5-<10 % party is in, in the other (purely theoretical, blatant) case it is not.

My point was also to show that it does make a difference, because many deny it. Some also believe that if the turnout is very low, the government is delegitimised.

But actually, I don't really care about the election results, except to see what the mood of the population is like. The only question remains, will they now go all out with "measures" or will it calm down. I fear the first.
