Somerset lost gold ring found on carrot dug up for dinner

A gold ring that was lost in a vegetable garden 12 years ago has been found on a carrot dug up for dinner.

Lin Keitch, 69, from Monkton Heathfield near Taunton, Somerset, noticed it while washing her home-grown vegetables.

It had been a 40th birthday present from her husband Dave, and was lost by their daughter.

The couple believe the carrot grew through the ring. Ms Keitch said it was a "chance in a million" discovery.

"Dave dug up the carrots and left them outside the back door," she said.

"I cut the greens off and scrubbed them, and I thought, 'What's that? Goodness, it's my ring'."

Bayer Shares Slide as Legal Troubles Mount Over Herbicides

Bayer AG shares continued their slide after the company failed to block California’s move to list the herbicide Roundup as a known carcinogen.

Bayer’s $63 billion purchase of Monsanto has opened the German drugmaker up to legal risks. A San Francisco state jury last week awarded a former groundskeeper $289 million on his claim that exposure to Roundup caused his cancer, and thousands of additional cases are pending. Meanwhile, Bayer is also facing lawsuits in the U.S. over dicamba, another herbicide in Monsanto’s portfolio.

Glyphosate, the main chemical in Roundup, was found in popular oat cereals, whole oats and breakfast bars in an Environmental Working Group report issued on Wednesday, the New York Times reported. The organization found the chemical in 43 of the 45 samples it tested from conventionally grown oats, and in five of the 16 samples it tested from organic products.

End of Greek bailouts offers little hope to young

On Monday, Greece ends its third and final financial bailout programme, having received more than €300bn (£269bn; $342bn) over eight years.

The government and its European lenders are keen to paint the end of the last bailout as a good thing, having avoided a "Grexit" in which the country would have crashed out of the eurozone into unknown territory.

But for many Greeks - especially the young - the damage has already been done.

A recent poll indicates that three-quarters of the population think the country is headed down the wrong path. The same number think the bailout deals, rather than saving Greece, actually harmed the country.

Taxes remain high and more than 90% of Greeks believe the lenders will keep a close watch on the country's spending for years.

Genoa fans watched the first 43 minutes of their home match with Empoli in silence as a tribute to the 43 people killed when a motorway bridge collapsed in the Italian city earlier in August.

It was the club's first game since a 200-metre section of the Morandi bridge suddenly fell on 14 August.

Fans had asked for "a deafening silence of 43 minutes, one for each child, worker, student, father or mother who are no longer with us today".

Genoa won Sunday's Serie A match 2-1.
