China on Wednesday unveiled the first of its kind PML (Permanent Magnetic Levitation) train in Xiong’an New Area, Hebei Province.
This mode of transport - similar to what Elon Musk has proposed (but not built) for the USA; is one of the most energy efficient methods of transportation in the world. The train carriage is “attached” to the track via extremely high powered magnets, and travels across the track without making direct contact with said track, removing friction from the equation.
The track is suspended above ground to prevent disruption to existing infrastructure/the environment, and is extremely safe; even if the track loses power, the magnets will keep the train suspended until repairs can be conducted.
