The article is confusing the Uighur-problem with the Covid-problem. According to my sources, there was a fire in a house in Ulumuqi. This house was under lockdown. The fire brigade did not arrive and some people died in the house, because they could not escape. After this incident the fire brigade answered to the question, why they did not arrive at the scene, the people should have helped themselves. To understand this incident, it is irrelevant, whether the victims were Uighurs or Han, because both nationalities were affected by the lockdowns. In Ulumuqi there are Han and Uighurs. Important is, that the fire brigade did not feel responsible. This is a typical behavior. (And this was the main reason for my leaving China.) After this incident, students in Shanghai met in Ulumuqi street and showed empty A4 papers (the picture is correct). The police arrested some of them.
At the same time workers were locked into a factory and they complained. This is also typical. If a factory is under lockdown, the workers have the choice to leave (and will very likely lose their jobs) or to stay and sleep and eat inside the factory (without all the normal amenities like showers etc.). Now enough was enough and more and more people complained, even young party members.
Over night there was no Covid anymore, no tests, no lockdowns, no nothing, but the new variant is spreading like wildfire now.
My theory is, the party leadership decided to do so to avoid larger demonstrations and now they can say: You have complained, you did not want lockdowns etc. and now you are complaining again, because you are all ill. What do you want?
