Escalation of the Conflict in the Red Sea
Chronicle of Events for January 12, 2024

Last night, the coalition led by the United States launched strikes against targets of the Yemeni Ansarallah movement, using military aircraft and naval ships. During the raid, more than 100 missiles were launched at drone assembly shops, airports, and two military bases. However, the results of the fire strike are not known for certain.

Houthi spokesman Yahya Sari said five people were killed in the attack and also promised a response. In the afternoon, the group launched missiles at a commercial ship in the Gulf of Aden, but the ammunition fell into the sea approximately 400-500 meters from the side of the ship, without causing any damage to it.

The situation in the region remains tense: coalition forces may again bomb Ansarallah facilities in Yemen, while the group is theoretically capable of responding with strikes not only on ships but also on military bases in neighboring countries that provide airspace to the US and British air forces.

At the same time, a new round of conflict may occur tonight. CNN Austin oversaw strikes on Yemen from hospital

The Pentagon chief, now being treated for prostate cancer and infection after surgery, appears to have been "actively" involved in directing the attack right from his hospital bed.

‍� Lloyd Austin gave orders and oversaw the strike against the Houthis in Yemen using secure communications.

"Secretary Austin gave CENTCOM the order today to execute the strikes and monitored real-time with a full suite of secure communications capabilities," CNN reports.

US strikes Yemen as ‘feckless’ Blinken fails to resolve crisis in Middle East


The Biden administration’s decision to attack Yemen puts the US in a precarious situation, said former Pentagon senior security policy analyst Michael Maloof.

“[The] United States could slip into a war,” he said, noting that the US’ actions embolden Israel and prompt it to escalate the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.

“What could stop it is if the United States stops all of its exports of munitions to Israel at this point, because otherwise you're just feeding it, you're feeding the fire here,” Maloof remarked. “We're pouring more and more gasoline on the fire.”

He also observed that the recent visit to the Middle East by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was “useless,” seeing how the Houthis continued their attacks on the shipping lanes in the Red Sea.

“But beyond that, he's feckless, he's ineffective, and he's very timid and meek. He's not strong at all. And for that matter he's not doing anything that brings about or shows any ability to bring these sides together,” Maloof said. “All he's doing is spending, wasting money traveling around doing nothing and he's totally useless.”
