Czechoslovakia, formerly a self-sufficient industrial power, was gradually divided, privatized and depleted. Before 1989, we were a country with free education and health care, a thriving industry, and zero debt. Thirty-five years after the Velvet Revolution, the picture of today's Czech Republic is quite different – high debt, loss of self-sufficiency and the feeling that we are just puppets in the hands of foreign interests.

Protest at the National Museum: a symbol of a divided society

The protest of Ladislav Vrábel, which took place under the stairs of the National Museum, is criticized by the media and part of the public, but it is necessary to reflect on its message. Hundreds of people came to express their dissatisfaction with the government and the symbolism of the Ukrainian flag at the Czech national institution. 
It would be a mistake to ignore this wave of discontent.

 The reminder of patriotism and the demand that only the Czech flag should hang on the building of the National Museum are legitimate manifestations of national feeling. The National Museum was originally founded as a "patriotic Museum" and was supposed to serve our culture and history, not the symbols of foreign states.

35 years after the revolution

Events 17. November should lead us to reflect on whether we really live in a democracy where citizens have the power to influence the course of the state, or whether we are just puppets in a system that works in favour of foreign interests. Ladislav Vrábel's Protest and other similar actions show that a part of society is willing to face up to these issues.

It should be remembered that national pride and sovereignty are not extreme attitudes, but the cornerstones of a Free State. Are we still free, or have we sold our freedom for promises that have never been fulfilled?
