Wasn't Syrian/Russian Air Defense aware of Russian craft in the area?

Sure, the losers here are NATO and Israel. On other hand Russia already can bring whatever it wants to Syria. IDF claimed that they targeted "weapon factories for Hezbollah" I think.

I think by accident he means the downing itself and it is correct. It wasn't deliberate action as in the Turkish case, it happened accidentaly when Syria responded to Israeli agression. He also said that he is in full agreement with MoD's statement (that puts responsibility for the incident solely on the Israeli state and reserves the right to retaliate).
