These are not first protests, there were a lot couple of months ago, so they didn't break out suddenly but are continuation of the protests before. Iraqis were supposed to continue with protests earlier but they gave a chance to this new PM to take care of the corruption and public services in Iraq.
A lot of the protesters are followers of Muqtada al-Sadr who fought the Americans and the British in Iraq for years. Majority of protesters are Iraqi Shias who are anti-American and anti-Israeli.
Majority of protesters are Shias that hold dearly to their Shia religion and ideology. Example is the video that Zod posted above where Iraqis are shouting "We are at your service Hussein" who is one of the biggest figures in Shia Islam and who stood against injustice and the corrupt Caliph of the Ummayad Empire.

Some desperate people trying to say these are anti Iran protests in Iraq lol The Shia are Cleary chanting for Hussien and Iran sees itself as the nation of Hussein so hardly anti Iran. The anti Iran chants are coming from the Sunni neighbourhoods of Bagdhad they are just butthurt that Iran backed PMF defeated ISIS.

From what I understand shias in Basra and Al sadr city are anti Iran and anti American and follow Mutada Al Sadr while shias in Najaf and Karbala are very pro Iran as most people in those cities have family members in Iran and they mostly follow Ayatollah Khamenei.
