If Trump signs this act into law, it will only accelerate Hong Kong’s economic decline. I pity the misguided youth who think Marco Rubio and Chuck Schumer actually care about them. That’s just the first 120 Starlink satellites out of tens of thousands that will go up in next few years.
In the early hours of the morning today, Monday, November 18, two astronomers checked in on their remotely operated telescope in Chile, expecting to see images of distant stars and galaxies. Instead, they saw a train of SpaceX satellites crossing the night sky, a worrying sign of what might be to come for astronomy.
“Here we were, we had a second half of the night observing, and then we kind of just see all of these streaks,” says Cliff Johnson from Northwestern University in Chicago, one of the two astronomers. “We put two and two together and it was like oh yeah, it’s the train of all the Starlink satellites.”
Starlink is SpaceX’s impending mega constellation of up to 42,000 satellites that will beam high-speed internet around the world. SpaceX, along with its competitors such as OneWeb and Amazon, has touted the benefits of bringing the internet to all, including the estimated three billion without internet access.
However, with just 3,000 active satellites orbiting earth today, many astronomers have expressed concerns that this dramatic increase will create many more artificial points of light in the night sky. For a science that relies on dark skies, having multiple satellites constantly visible could pose significant problems.

Reminder that the gas prices in Iran were raised from around $0.08 per litre to $0.13 per litre. Still the lowest rate in the world. Average cost in the U.S is $2.95/litre. It doesn't invalidate deserving grievances but puts things into perspective. https://t.co/Zxf0dg8PCo

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-russia-space-fraud/russia-opens-investigation-into-space-center-fraud-after-putin-rebuke-idUSKBN1XV0TB
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian investigators said on Thursday they had opened two criminal cases into the management of a company involved in building the Vostochny Cosmodrome, a space center in the country’s Far East.
The announcement came less than two weeks after President Vladimir Putin complained to government officials about corruption at the facility and called for further investigations.
Construction of the Vostochny Cosmodrome began in January 2011, part of a plan for Russia to reduce its dependency on the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, which Russia leases from the former Soviet Republic for space operations.
But Putin told government officials earlier this month he was dismayed by the level of graft there.
“Hundreds of millions have been stolen. Hundreds of millions. Several dozen criminal cases have already been initiated. There have already been court decisions, people are in prison,” said Putin.
His spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said later that 11 billion roubles ($172.45 million) of a total 91 billion roubles allocated to the project had been stolen.
Investigators said on Thursday that they were looking into allegations that fraudulent financial documents had led to the theft of 240 million roubles ($3.8 million) between November 2018 and May 2019.
