You wrote it - in Austria-Hungaria Czechs had no or nearly no influence on politics. Beside that, forced Germanization of the Czech people was in the place. After Germans lost the war and Czechoslovakia became independent some Germans, mostly from Sudetland, became butthurted. This became Hitler's main pretext to claim part of Czech territory. And western traitors allowed him to take it. Then, he took the rest of the country, totally unoposed by the west. Only Soviet Union warned and condemned this.
German Lnadsmanschaft is still butthurted that they were kicked out from Sudetland after they lost WWII too...
Maybe I should tell you, that my mother was exactely from this region. But she never was a member of the "Landsmannschaft", because she opposed their ideas. Her family had a mixed German-Slovakian background. So I always try to be balanced and neutral on these points. Maybe it would have been possible to live in a multi-national state, but there were too many provocations from both sides. My mother even had the chance to hide with Moravian farmers and escape the kicking out.
That's the other side of the coin. There were numbers of asshats in Sudetland. Sadly, even the good people from the region were punished afterwards. It's always like that. Those, who were deported, were extremely lucky because there was many Czechs ready to kill them all. I can't say I condemn it. After the atrocities commited by Germans emotions were pretty strong when the war was finished. Guess it's pretty hard to imagine.

Finally someone got it! No, it's not from a TV series, it's from a movie (at least 2 parts) about 三国. The actor is playing 诸葛亮, the strategist of 刘备.

Fascinating indeed. I didn't realize that 普通話 was how "Mandarin" was written. The Japanese call it 中国語 (chuugokugo). When I saw that, I read it as "futsuuwa", or "common tongue", in Japanese. It's interesting to me how a knowledge of 漢字 (汉字) allows me to read some 普通話. It's actually easier to read 文言文 than 普通話, because 漢字 were derived from the traditional characters rather than the simplified characters.
So you are a native English speaker? This is what I'm using as an introduction to 文言文: http://www.iub.edu/~e103/306/C306-Main.html

That's the great thing about this writing system: You can understand it immediately! Yes it's the"common language" and it's pronounced "putonghua". I think 文言文 is easier, because they use one 汉字 per word, 普通話 uses at least two with the same meaning per word.

Haha, no, I've actually been doing some vocabulary reviews while posting here. I haven't been reading the conversations.
That's good to know about 文言文. I'd like to learn 普通话, but it's too much to add to my plate. 文言文 is less of a commitment and opens up the classics.

"This is not a new world, it is simply an extension of what began in the old one. It has patterned itself after every dictator who has ever planted the ripping imprint of a boot on the pages of history since the beginning of time.
