Mainly it's because of the "chosen people"rhetoric I think. They took this concept (very spiritual imho) from Judaism judaism and projected it to the material world. It seems that Rajoy's days are coming to an end, and we will have a new government for a year or a year and a half, before new elections are called.

Rajoy was going to restore them their powers anyway. The  new Catalan govt has decided to appoint a new cabinet of ministers who are not imprisoned and will not be facing the court.

I don't think they will take the same hardline stance as Rajoy, what I think will happen is that Socialists will leave some room for some type of agreement, but the basic red lines will remain.

I fully agree and I would like to add: The Zionists are a Jewish Group, not a non-Jewish one, but they are non-religious and secular. This is nothing new. Even in antiquity there were lot of different Jewish groups. After the "Babylonian Exile" the Jews got permission by the Persian king to settle, where ever they wanted within the Persian Empire. And one group "returned" to Jerusalem to built the "second temple". They had a clear territorial claim and the inhabitants of this area (Jews themselves: "Samaritans") complained to the Persian king about them. But there were lot of Jewish "temples" in the Persian Empire. The crazy problem is, that even nowadays the Israelis cannot find any trace of the "first temple". So their whole claim is futile.
