An Ottoman Khalifa?



In about 1517 the Ottomans transported the last Abbasid Khalifa from Kairo to Istanbul. The Abbasids had stayed in Kairo under the protection of the Mamluks since about 1273, when the Mongols had conquered Baghdad. The Ottomans did not claim the title Khalifa for themselves, because the umma would not have recognized them. A Khalifa has to be a member of the Quraish, the tribe of Muhammad and the Ottomans were of Turkish descend. The Ottomans called themselves sultans or padishahs. Only in correspondence with Western powers they called themselves sometimes Khalifa.
Not long before WW I the Ottomans claimed to be Khalifas in a kind of constitution. After WW I first the Sultanate was abolished and then this pseudo-Khalifate under Mustafa Kemal "Atatürk". Then the Hashimi the protectors of Mekka and Medina claimed the title for themselves. They were descendents of Muhammad. But the Saudis and Wahhabis occupied Mekka and Medina and the Hashimi fled to Amman and Baghdad. From this time onward there was no Khalifa until now.
If now Turkey would claim this title, the universities of al-Azhar and Qom would issue fatwas immediately, not to recognize this pseudo-Khalifa.
There is no problem with the Talibans claiming to have an Emir (duke), or if someone would claim to be a Malik (king of Arabian descent), Sultan (king of Turkish descent) or Shah (king of Persian descent). But Khalifa is a religious title, that has to be recognized by all the umma. Even the Shia can only recognize a Khalifa from the family of Muhammad (cf. the Fatimid Khalifas of the 7er Shia in Egypt).
The reason is simple. The word Khalifa means "successor", like the Greek word διαδοχος. Khalifa refers to Muhammad and διαδοχος refers to Alexander the Great.
