It is similar in Germany, where only some "numbers" look nice. This was introduced with the fabulous "Agenda 2010".

Many years ago there was a stupid PR "Du bist Deutschland" ("You are Germany"), where I wondered what this nonsense was all about. A few years later came the "solution to the riddle" with the new PR "Deutschland geht es gut" ("Germany is doing well"). Unfortunately, even those who are not doing well believe this and think they are individual cases and have only themselves to blame.

The other day I came across a study from 2016, where official figures from 2012 were evaluated (they actually need four years to publish this!). It showed that of the ~43 million people in work, almost 40% earn so little that they don't have to pay taxes. At that time, the tax-free amount was ~700 €, now just over 800 €. In Germany, one can hardly exist on this amount, but even the many who earn just over this amount can hardly manage. It is safe to assume that more than half of the employed live somewhere in the "poverty" range.

Yeah, Germany is doing well, but I am certainly not Germany.
