No, I don't think you're being paranoid. The whole thing probably boils down to a modern form of the old story: "I owe my soul to the company store". I'd like to point out again what I read several years ago. It was a sci-fi novel where everything was organised in the way suggested above. One day the protagonist's card was invalid and everything was gone, flat, "credit", access to everything.
