On International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, a reminder that neocolonial wealth drain from the Global South to North is at the root of the global poverty crisis. 

A 2021 study by New Political Economy found that between 1960-2017 the Global South lost $62 trillion dollars, in real terms, to unequal trade with the Global North. Had that value stayed in the Global South, been used to invest in economic development, and grown at the same GDP growth rates in the South over that period, the sum would be worth $152 trillion today.

For the South, losses far exceed foreign aid. For every dollar of aid the South receives, it loses at least $14 through unequal exchange – a huge underestimate that does not account for losses from illicit financial outflows such as tax evasion.

Meanwhile, the Global North continues draining $2.2 trillion annually from the South in Northern prices. According to the study, this amount of money would be enough "to end extreme poverty, globally, fifteen times over."
