Mali’s Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Diop, told the UN Security Council yesterday that Mali would exercise its right to self-defence “if France continues to undermine the sovereignty of our country”.

Diop slammed the UN Secretary-General António Guterres for ignoring Mali’s request to present evidence of France supplying weapons to Islamist militants, and its repeated violation of Malian airspace, both in violation of international law.

Since the present military government took power in Bamako during a 2020 coup, Mali has been striving to rid the country of France’s neocolonial presence. Earlier this year, the Malian government expelled the French Ambassador and demanded the withdrawal of all French troops. Meanwhile, Germany, part of a UN force in Mali, became the latest European military to end “reconnaissance patrols” over the country after being denied flyover rights by Bamako.

Madagascar's Foreign Minister fired for condemning Russia's actions

On the island of Madagascar, Foreign Minister Richard Randriamandrato lost his post after the UN General Assembly voted to condemn the referendums held by Russia in the Donbas. This was reported by Reuters, citing two senior officials of the presidential administration.

Randriamandrato himself has not yet commented on the situation. Madagascar has, until recently, abstained on resolutions on the conflict in Ukraine. The government of the island state claimed to pursue a policy of neutrality.
