Rumours swirl after Xi Jinping fails to give key Brics speech

Xi was due to address high profile forum in South Africa, but instead his speech was read out by his commerce minister. China’s leader, Xi Jinping, unexpectedly skipped a scheduled speech at a key multilateral business forum in South Africa on Tuesday.

Xi arrived in Johannesburg for the Brics summit on Monday evening on what is only his second international trip this year, after visiting Moscow in March. He was met on the airport tarmac by South African president Cyril Ramaphosa.

According to the summit schedule, Xi was expected to attend the forum and deliver remarks alongside other leaders on Tuesday. But instead his speech was read out by his commerce minister, Wang Wentao.

Xi later attended the summit dinner, but no reason was given for missing the speech. It appeared to be a last-minute decision, as state media articles and social media posts from China’s foreign ministry spokesperson were published as though he had delivered it himself.Some China watchers speculated whether something was “amiss” or if Xi was temporarily ill, but an explanation is unlikely to be given.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down over Ukraine in 2014 at 32,998 feet by a Buk ground-to-air missile. "Known" models of MANPADS like stingers are generally designed to engage and target low-flying aircraft, typically at altitudes ranging from around 10 to 15,000 feet. So unless this was something new that we're not aware of... then it looks to have been shot down by Russian air defense systems. There will be evidence of what SAM shot it down... which will be interesting.

In one of the videos of the Prigozhin crash, as the camera pans left, for just a few frames this is visible moving at perhaps 90-120 degrees from the direction the plane was taking.

The object is slightly elongated due to the camera movement, but is clearly an aircraft of some type.
