Supply from Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 project halted by US sanctions

The start of supply from Russia's newest liquefied natural gas project Arctic LNG 2 will be delayed after the company declared force majeure on supplies due to US sanctions.

Force majeure is a legal clause that allows companies to suspend deliveries for reasons beyond their control.

The development adds to supply risks in other markets, as ships have been diverted from the Red Sea in recent days due to attacks on vessels there.

Novatek, which leads the Arctic LNG 2 project, had planned to start production at the first of three processing lines by the end of the year and was aiming to ship the first cargoes from the plant in early 2024.

The plant is also set to make up a large portion of the LNG supply expected to come online in 2024, said Talon Custer, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence.

“If the project is significantly delayed or it does not ship cargoes next year, this would severely limit global LNG supply growth — down to about 2.5% versus the 3.5% that we projected,” he said. “Lower-than-anticipated supply growth could boost prices and amplify volatility.”

Netherlands spent €400 billion on migrants between 1995 and 2019, according to new landmark study

New study from the University of Amsterdam reveals the enormous costs of mass immigration to the Netherlands over a nearly 25-year timeframe, with the 278-page report adding to the growing list of evidence refuting claims that migrants contribute to national budgets in the West, create jobs, and prop up faltering pension systems.

The landmark study, entitled “Borderless Welfare State: The Consequences of Immigration on Public Finances,” shows that net costs of immigration to the Dutch public sector over the period 1995-2019 were an astounding €400 billion, averaging €17 billion a year, with a peak of €32 billion in 2016 due to the 2015 “refugee crisis.”

To put these figures in perspective, the Dutch government spent around €30 billion on education in 2016, €2 billion less than it spent on migrants in the same year.
