Cyprus Communists demand end to Israeli ties after Hezbollah warning

The Communist Initiative of Cyprus (CIC) issued Thursday a strong statement condemning the Cypriot government's cooperation with the Israeli occupation amid the ongoing war on Gaza.

The statement, titled "Cyprus is directly involved in the Gaza massacre: Every cooperation with Israel must stop," calls for an immediate cessation of all forms of support to the Israeli occupation.

"President Christodoulides lies shamelessly when, in his attempt to justify the unacceptable attitude of the government, [he] claims that Cyprus is supposedly part of the solution and not the problem," the CIC stated. "The government is staining its hands with blood at the expense of a people suffering from occupation and colonization."

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday summoned the Armenian ambassador to Tel Aviv to reprimand him hours after his country announced its recognition of the State of Palestine.

Iran's security forces have imposed movement restrictions against former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, sources confirmed to Iran International.

The limitations were imposed after Ahmadinejad's return from a trip to northern Iran, the sources said.

Ahmadinejad has turned into a critic of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's policies in recent years and assumed an anti-establishment image.

Leaders of Iran's Green Movement, Mir-Hossein Mousavi and his wife Zahra Rahnavard as well as Mehdi Karroubi, were similarly put under house arrest in 2011 for not accepting the results of the 2009 elections which brought Ahmadinejad to power and urging supporters to protest.

Foreign states spread New Caledonia ‘misinformation’

Authorities banned the Chinese-owned app TikTok, believing it was being used to spread disinformation.

French disinformation watchdog Viginum also detected a co-ordinated social media campaign from accounts linked to Azerbaijan’s ruling party.

Azerbaijan’s relationship with France has deteriorated over French support for Armenia in their border war.

The campaign shared at least 86 posts on X featuring an image appearing to show a man in khaki pointing a rifle at a Kanak protester on the ground, Viginum reported.

The image, which was actually two different photographs spliced together, was reposted with the caption: “The french police are murderers – Algerian Murders continue”, and hashtags including #RecognizeNewCaledonia, #EndFrenchColonialism and #BoycottParis2024.

Azerbaijan’s involvement is unusual, Australian Strategic Policy Institute analyst Blake Johnson said.

Dr Frederic Grare, an Indo-Pacific security expert at the Australian National University, said Azerbaijan founded the Baku Initiative Group in 2023 to support anti-colonial claims against France.

He said Azerbaijani flags were seen at demonstrations in New Caledonia before the recent unrest.
