Mali is huge mess. Govt. military forces, accompanied with Wagners, were ambushed by Tuaregs. Ambush resulted in large scale losses on the govt. Wagner side. New informations calim that Kiev SpecOps were involved in the ambush. AFAIK Tuaregs are al-Qaeda linked insurgents. So NATO supported irregulars we all know from Syria or Libya...

The situation is more complex, than it seems.




The modern border-lines were drawn by the French as administrative borders across the Tuareg area. Again and again the Tuareg tried get an independent state, but they failed again and again. As far as I know, in 2012 the Tuareg again attacked the central government and tried to create an independent state: Azawad. The movement seems to have the name: MNLA. During the fights, they were joined by AQIM, a local al-Qaida group. AQIM also draws its members mostly from the Tuareg. Both groups have Western or NATO weapons. MNLA seems to have got the weapons, because many Tuareg had positions in the official Mali armed forces and they joined MNLA, when the uprising began. AQIM seems to have got their weapons from Libya.
As much as I think the Tuareg have a legitimate claim for an independent state, US and France are using them against the governments in Mali and Niger.

Various types of "informed" channels are spewing gruesome details of what happened in Mali with the Wagners. They say that the Mi-24s were shot down, and dozens of people were killed, and dozens were taken prisoner. And of course they do not miss an opportunity to kick and curse the commanders. 
Naturally, the reality, to put it mildly, is very different from the information being dispersed.

This information was given to me directly from the scene, with a request to tell the truth and stop the flow of lies against the guys and the command.
