Over the past 14 months, Algeria has expelled more than 13,000 people, including pregnant women and children, into the Sahara desert. Without water and food, they are forced to leave the country through the desert. Many paths do not survive.
Al Jazeera states the Associated Press (AP), who spoke with more than 25 survivors. Most are sent to Niger, and if they are lucky, they arrive in the border village of Asamak. Other survivors spend days wandering in the desert before being found by UN rescuers. Many immigrants die in the desert, their number is unknown.
"Women and men were lying dead, others were lost in the desert because they did not know the path," said Janet Kamara , who was pregnant while crossing the desert. "Everyone was left to herself," said Liberian, who lost her son on the way.
Algeria strengthened the mass expulsions of immigrants since October 2017, when the EU renewed its pressure on North African countries not to leave immigrants traveling north to Europe across the Mediterranean Sea or to enter the territory of the EU by crossing the French Ceuta and Melilla .
The AP spoke with immigrants who said they were put into hundreds of lorries at hundreds of miles and led them to the desert to show them in which direction Niger was. Then, they were forced to walk there, sometimes with the pointed guns. They leave the Algerian forces without the phones and money in the desert, they say survivors. The US Press Agency has testified to surviving video receipts that it has acquired for several months.
Liberian Ju Dennis recorded his expulsion with a hidden phone. The clip shows people who are squeezed on the floor of the truck, how they in vain try to protect themselves from the burning sun and hide from the soldiers.
An EU spokeswoman, quoted by Al Jazeera, said the EU is aware of Algeria's work, but that "sovereign states" can expel migrants and refugees as long as they do so in accordance with international law. They keep coming though. No one complains much about how north African states are treating them, I got a feeling Algerians could mount MG nests and just shoot at them and nobody would say a thing. Europeans on other hand, we can't afford to break a nail on some of these coming in.

Harley-Davidson plans to shift some motorcycle production away from the US to avoid the "substantial" burden of European Union tariffs.
Last week the EU introduced retaliatory tariffs on US goods, including bourbon, orange juice and motorcycles.
Wisconsin-based Harley-Davidson has assembly plants in Australia, Brazil, India and Thailand.
The company said it would raise investment in its international plants, but did not say which ones.
The firm's decision is one of the most visible consequences of the trade disputes triggered by US President Donald Trump's decision to levy tariffs on steel and aluminium.
