Karl May is very special. From the late 19th to the mid 20th century, he was the most read German author, even among German-Americans. He never sat at a camp fire with an Apache or a Comanche,  but he gave them a voice. All little German boys wanted to be Indians and support them against run-away European criminals. These novels were bestsellers at their time. All workers, house servents and underclass people were reading them. But even here he was exploited. Gerhardt Hauptmann was plagiarizing him for his famous "The Weavers".
One novel was taking place in the border region of Mexico and the US, one was taking place in the Ottoman empire, one described the battle of Waterloo and one the life of Ludwig II of Bavaria. To earn more money, Karl May made deals with publishers in Southern Germany. He was so overworked, that he just re-worked his already published novels for the more Christian Bavarians and Swabians. So he eliminated all love-stories and all critique on the church. Again he won the hearts of the readers. He just changed the German hero searching for his kidnapped girl-friend into a German searching for his Indian blood-brother. This time he published everything under his real name. So his old publisher thought to make more money by unveiling the pseudonym. But now his Christian fans were shocked. So he had to file a law-suit against his former publisher.
