Recent fighting near the city of Goma in the eastern Congo has alarmed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which said on Monday that it was worried by the "escalating violence" in the region. The council condemned the offensive launched earlier this month by M23 rebels.

Also on Monday, South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that his country was deploying 2,900 troops as part of a joint effort of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to quell the fighting in the Congo. SADC forces are already combating alongside the Congolese army.

Confrontations between M23 and government forces are concentrated around the town of Sake. With its roughly 50,000 inhabitants, Sake, situated just west of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, is seen as a strategic position. It is only a twenty-minute drive away from Goma, analyst Onesphore Sematumba from the think tank Crisis Group told DW.

DR Congo protests: Police fire tear gas to disperse anti-Western demonstrations in Kinshasa

The protesters accuse the governments of failing to use their influence over neighbouring Rwanda to curb a rebellion in eastern DR Congo.

Rwanda is accused of backing the M23 rebel group, which it denies.

Angry protesters burnt the flags of the US and Belgium, DR Congo's former colonial power, on Monday.

Demonstrations have taken place outside several Western embassies in recent days .

In the latest protests, anti-riot police pushed back demonstrators as they tried to advance towards embassies.

"The Westerners are behind the looting of our country. Rwanda doesn't work alone, so they must leave our country," Pepin Mbindu, who joined the protest, was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.

The Rwandan army supporting M23 rebels in an escalating conflict in eastern DR Congo is using sophisticated weapons such as surface-to-air missiles, according to a UN document seen by AFP on Monday.
Amid intensifying fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a "suspected Rwandan Defence Force (RDF) mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM)" was fired at a UN observation drone last Wednesday without hitting it, the confidential report said.

The United States rejected Russia's proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine . This was reported by Reuters , citing three Russian sources familiar with these discussions.

According to them, Russian President Vladimir Putin last year, through intermediaries, including in the Middle East, made it clear that Russia is ready to consider the possibility of a ceasefire on Ukrainian territory. One of Moscow's conditions was the preservation of Russian territorial acquisitions.

It is noted that in Washington these proposals were discussed at the level of senior officials of the American administration. According to the agency, in January 2024, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan called Putin's adviser Yuri Ushakov and said that Washington did not accept Moscow's proposal because it was not ready to discuss this issue without the participation of Kiev.
