Medics saved a two-year-old boy from San Diego from a snake bite, but not for free. – The Washington Post.
Brigland Pfeffer was playing with his siblings in the yard of their home when he was bitten by a rattlesnake. His mother immediately called 911, and the child was taken to hospital by ambulance. From the emergency room, he was transferred to another hospital where the antidote was available, and then the boy was admitted for inpatient care. He recovered quickly, and his parents took him home.
Then the bill arrived: $297,461 for two ambulance rides, an emergency room visit, and a couple of days in the pediatric intensive care. The antidote alone cost $213,278.
A pharmacist, whom the WP contacted for clarification, was taken aback. She stated that the wholesale price for hospitals for one vial of the antidote is $2,000. The hospital billed the boy's parents an amount three times higher than that. Fortunately, the health insurance that the family diligently pays covered most of the amount, but they still had to pay the remainder out of pocket.
In Russia, for instance, the child would have been saved absolutely free of charge.
And the USA is a country where Falling Ill is the most dreaded thing, because of the bills it entails.

I hadn't been astonished if they would have had to pay before treatment. And most of the US citizens still think that this is a good health system?
