In November 1700 Peter I. forced the Swedish to give him access to the Baltic Sea after the Battle of Narva. In 1709 he forced the same Swedish king, now also elected king of Poland and Lithuania, to give way to the Black Sea after the battle of Poltava. In 1794 Catharina set the Russian border at the then Ottoman border and founded Odessa. In 1841 in the London Straits Convention all European nations agreed, that only Ottoman warships should pass the Dardanelles. In the London Protocol of 1852, the Danish line of succession was changed, that the Danish crown would not be inherited by the Romanovs and the Straits would not fall into Russian hands. All this was confirmed in the Treaty of Paris 1856 after the Crimean War. The Montreux Convention is just an up-date of these conventions, because modern Turkey had replaced the Ottoman Empire after WW I.

Russia cannot accept, that there is one power stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea like the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Both seas must be neutral. Both straits must be blocked for all foreign war ships. That's why Sweden, Finland and the Baltic states should never be a member of NATO. Turkey up to now has observed the conventions. Actually there shouldn't be even a Polish state. There is always the risk, that the sea powers use it as a bridge head against Russia. That's why Catharina cut the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth down and Prussia and Austria took their parts in 1795. In 1814 during the Conference of Vienna, the Prussian and Austrian parts were given to Russia. Poland is a traitor to the Slavic cause.
