German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said "vigilante justice" will not be tolerated after far-right unrest over a murder in the eastern city of Chemnitz.
Scuffles have broken out during two days of protests by hundreds of people in the city centre since a German was stabbed to death early on Sunday.
A Syrian man and an Iraqi man have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Police were still out in strength on Monday evening, braced for new demonstrations by both right and left.
They are also investigating alleged assaults on an Afghan, a Syrian and a Bulgarian during the unrest.

White house had lowered the flag to half-mast in memory of McCain. Usually when the WH flag is put at half-mast done it's kept down until the funeral of the person has passed. Then, today, the WH flag was suddenly raised today many days before McCain's funeral.

- In an article titled ‘When the German national team disintegrated into small groups’, German outlet Der Spiegel reports that a group including Ozil, Jerome Boateng and Ilkay Gundogan, three players with ethnic heritage, encountered Bayern Munich pair Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels in training.
The two groups, understood to have differing tastes in areas such as music, cars and lifestyle, then engaged in a slanging match, in which one side called the other ‘kanake’ – a pejorative term taken to mean “wog,” or a non-white immigrant.
In response, the other group then fired back with ‘kartoffel’ (potato) – a derogatory term for Germans used by the ethnic immigrant population, originating from the prominence of the ingredient in German cuisine.
The revelations are likely to add fire to the ongoing debate of racism and poor treatment of former midfielder Ozil, who retired from Die Mannschaft at the age of 29 citing unfair treatment and “racism” from national media and the German FA (DFB).

Rival protests over a murder in the east German city of Chemnitz have ended with several people injured as objects were hurled by both sides, police say.
Far-right activists had gathered in the centre for a second day as a Syrian and an Iraqi remained under arrest on suspicion of Sunday's deadly stabbing.
Anti-Nazi activists rallied just metres away, accusing the far right of using the death for political ends.
"We don't tolerate such unlawful assemblies and the hounding of people who look different or have different origins and attempts to spread hatred on the streets," Mrs Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, told journalists.
